Si Bheag, Si Mhor

Si Bheag, Si Mhor (Sheebeg and Sheemore), an Air, was the first composition by blind Irish Harp Turlough O’Carolan (1670 – 1738). Although not a composer in the classical sense, Carolan is considered by some to be Ireland’s national composer. After being blinded by smallpox at the age of eighteen, Carolan was apprenticed by Mrs. MacDermott Roe to be a good harper as that was considered a career for people who were blind then. At the age of twenty-one, being given a horse and a guide, he set out to travel Ireland and compose songs for patrons. For almost fifty years, Carolan journeyed from one end of Ireland to the other, composing and performing his tunes.
